In San Ignacio they have a local food market everyday downtown. On Saturday everyone in town is there buying and/or selling because, Saturday is the big market day. Here they sell everything from fruit to spices such as vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs, honey, coconut oils, spices, ginger root, coco root, meat, cheese, milk, juice, sauces, curry powder, cilli paste, etc. People from the local restaurants come here to buy there food and spices for cooking.
Here are some pictures from when we went there.
Here in San Ignacio the people do not have to go to a pharmacy to get medicine. They can use the medicinal plants, that grow in the jungle around them, because they know what the plants can do to help them. The people are very good at identifying each plant by the leaves, bark, fruit, flowers, and even smell. The people of the area have passed down the knowledge of plant identification, medicinal uses and specific preparations for many generations. The Mayans were the first to use the plants this way. Below are pictures of only a few of the many medicinal plants that thrive here. Each plant is followed by facts related to its benefit and usage.
